5-Axis Machining Centre

Simultaneous 5-axis CNC machining on a Haas UMC trunnion-table machining centre. Complex surfaces, compound-angle holes and multi-face parts in one setup — fewer setups mean less stack-up error and shorter lead times.

01Why 5-axis matters

Machining five faces on a 3-axis machine takes at least three setups, and every setup shifts the datum. On a 5-axis machining centre the table tilts on B and rotates on C, the part is clamped once and every face is cut against the same datum.

In simultaneous mode the cutter stays tangent to the surface as it moves; shorter tools reduce vibration, surface finish improves, and free-form geometries such as aerofoil profiles and conical blends are finished in one pass.

04Programming and verification

Toolpaths are simulated in CAM; collision and rest-material checks happen before the machine. The first part is measured on the CMM, the toolpath is corrected if needed, and production runs on the approved program.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 3+2 and simultaneous 5-axis?
In 3+2 the table indexes to an angle and locks while cutting continues in 3 axes; in simultaneous mode all five axes move together. 3+2 suits prismatic parts, free-form surfaces need simultaneous. We run both.
What is the largest part size?
Table Ø500 mm, travel 762 × 508 × 508 mm. Because tool–part interaction during rotation depends on geometry, the limit is assessed per part.
